Pug outline tattoo on an arm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single pug dog is drawn in a continuous black outline, with its face, ears and eyes shaded in solid black. The body is left open with no shading, so the skin shows through the pale areas. The design sits on an arm against a plain pale background, with the subject centred and fully visible.

The sundial in Assos has told the wrong hour for as long as anyone can remember, and the reason is Obol, a pug the colour of old tallow, who has decided the bronze gnomon is the only warm thing in the agora. I am the one who has to fetch him. My mother says a boy with a bad leg should not be climbing marble steps, but she has never tried lifting a dog that sets his feet like a wrestler at the games.

The magistrate wants the dial moved to the new fountain. The stonemasons swear the sun has drifted and the lines are wrong. Obol simply snores on the shadow and grumbles with his whole squashed face whenever I try to lift him off. In the end I bargained with Hermon the baker for three honey cakes and a promise that I would sweep his step for a month, and I carried the cakes up the stairs in one hand and the dog in the other.
At noon the next day the shadow fell across the stone exactly, and for once the whole square looked up and agreed on the hour. The magistrate declared the dog an official assessor of time and had a small brass collar made for him, which he chewed through by evening. Only then did I notice that Obol had never been sleeping at all. He had been lying on the gnomon, waiting for the shadow to stop moving.
When the sun went down he slid off the stone, leaving a faint print of his belly in the dust, and trotted home ahead of me with his tail held high like a question mark. I still find that pale mark in the morning, a round ghost with four short legs, and I tell the baker it is the hour.
