A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Up on the ninth floor of Harwick House the lift broke so often that the caretaker, Mr Okonedo, kept a bucket of sand by the stairs for the children who would not climb. Eliza Pratt lived on the ninth with a canary she was not supposed to keep, and across the gap of forty feet of cold air lived a boy called Tomas, who hung his football socks on a line from the sixth floor balcony. In summer the swifts screamed through that gap, and nobody thought much about it.

One evening Tomas sent a paper boat across on a length of kitchen string, and Eliza sent back a biscuit tied in a handkerchief. After that they sent things every night: a conker, a bent spoon, a note saying the lift was still broken. Mr Okonedo grew a single stalk of bamboo in a tin on his windowsill and said it was the only green thing in the building that would listen to him. The children said the string was a branch, and that the two of them were birds who could not fly, so they had to perch on it and call.

In February the wind snapped the string clean at the middle. Eliza stood at her rail for three nights with the bucket of sand at her feet and watched the dark where the line used to be. On the fourth morning the lift was mended, and Tomas came up the stairs two at a time, carrying a fresh reel of string and no breath at all.

They tied it tighter that time, from the balcony rail to the bamboo tin and back, and they did not send anything across again. They simply sat each side of the gap and talked, and the string between them held its small green and lilac weight all through the spring.
