Matching parakeet tattoos on wrists
Other · Colour · Photo
Two small cartoon parakeets sit on a short branch, with thin hanging lines and tiny red hearts above them. The green bird on the left and the grey bird on the right have bold outlines, soft shading and simple round eyes, and the grey bird wears a small pink flower on its head. The pair is shown side by side across two inner wrists, forming a matching design.

The parakeet had been tapping at the day room window since half past one, a small grey one with a pink flower caught in the feathers above its eye, and Ruth Adeyemi had given up pretending it was a moth. Ward 9 was quiet for once. Little Kofi in bed four had finally stopped asking for his mum, and the only sound was the hum of the ice machine down the corridor.

She eased the casement open, and the bird hopped onto the sill and looked at her as though she were late. Ruth knew whose it was. Mr Pryce, the night porter, kept a green parakeet in a cage behind the lifts, a bird he claimed had been left to him by a nan who died in Bay C. He swore it could whistle the shipping forecast. Nobody had believed him until the grey one turned up, and then the green one went missing from its cage the same night.
At four o'clock she found them both on the branch of the potted fig by the lifts, perched so close their wings touched, the green one tugging at a loose thread on the grey one's collar. Mr Pryce came round the corner with a mop and stopped dead. "Found them," he said, not quite steady. "Found them together."
Ruth went back to her station and wrote in the handover book: two birds, one window, both accounted for. Then she added, in smaller letters underneath, that the grey one had flown back to the sill at dawn and waited there until someone let it in.
