Two cartoon love birds on matching wrists
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two small cartoon birds sit side by side on a thin perch, each with a large round eye and an orange beak, with tiny red hearts scattered between them. The left bird is green and the right is mauve with a small pink flower on its head, both outlined in dark ink with soft shading. The two matching designs are placed on the inner wrists of two people, with thin hanging lines above each bird.

The pears had split on the low branches by the time Ruth reached the orchard gate, wasps working at the sweet cracks. She carried two buckets down the rows towards the cottage, where the aviary her father built still hung from the apple wall. Two lovebirds lived in it, one green and one the colour of a damson, and they were the only things on the farm that had never once asked her for anything.

Her sister Dilys had not come since June. The crates waited under the damson tree, and Ruth found the birds let out, perched on the top wire of the gate in the sun. The green one had its beak pressed against the mauve one's neck, the way they did when they wanted to be close and had no other way of saying so. A pink flower from the hedge was tucked behind the mauve bird's head, though Ruth could not think who had put it there.
She sat on the step and thought about the letter in her coat pocket, the one with a Leeds postmark that she had not yet opened. Dilys had gone north in spring with a man who sold looms, and Ruth had told herself it was not her business. Then the green bird hopped to the end of the wire, tipped its head, and looked down at her with one large round eye, as if it were waiting for her to decide.
Ruth stood, tore the envelope open with her thumb, and read it among the wasps. Then she set the letter on the step, weighted it with a split pear, and took the ladder out to the Bramleys, because they would not pick themselves and because, for once, she wanted to be the one who went first.
