Fine line tattoos of a letter K with a heart and a letter Q with a heart on two adjacent fingers of a hand, in black ink.

King and queen of hearts on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two adjacent fingers are pressed together, each with a small black tattoo on the middle section. One finger shows a serif letter K followed by a solid heart, and the other shows a solid heart followed by a letter Q, in a playing card style. The thin, delicate linework and solid black ink sit against a plain pale background in a soft, slightly warm-toned photograph.

The deck came up one card short, and Maud Pelling knew it before the first hand was dealt, because the queen of hearts had been missing from her own pocket since Tuesday. She laid the king on the green baize of the back room at the Ship Inn and said nothing, which was how she had won her first pound in that room at fourteen.

Harold Quill had been dealing there for thirty years and cheating for twenty-nine of them, and everyone knew it except the new lad from the brewery, who kept folding his winnings into his cap. Quill riffled the pack with a clatter meant to cover the card he slid up his cuff. Maud watched his wrists the way her mother had taught her to watch a kettle, waiting for the moment before it sings.

When the pot reached sixty pounds, Quill called for the cut, and Maud pressed one flat palm down on the deck and felt an edge under her knuckle. "Your sleeve's heavy, Harold," she said. He went white and shook the queen out onto the cloth, where it landed face up beside her king.

Nobody asked her to explain, and she didn't. She drew the king from her own sleeve, set it against the queen so their red hearts touched at the corners, and pushed the sixty pounds across the baize to the lad with the cap. "Fair's fair," she said. The room laughed, Harold went home without his coat, and the two cards stayed on the table long after the lamps were turned down, a king and a queen who had finally found their way back into the same hand.
