Matching lovebird tattoos on wrists
Other · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists show a pair of matching cartoon lovebirds perched on a thin branch, with small red hearts and a tiny purple flower around them. The linework is clean and bold with soft shading on the feathers, and the birds have large round eyes. The left bird is mainly green with orange beak detail, while the right bird is grey-mauve with warm orange accents, set against bare skin in a close, straight-on composition.

Tommy Fenn won us at the coconut shy on the second night at Dunmere, which is how most birds end up with a bad owner. He kept us in a biscuit tin with two holes punched in the lid, and every evening he carried it to the swing boats and set it on the rail so we could watch the lamps come on. Dot, the grey one, pressed her beak to the gap each time and asked me the same question with her eyes, and I pretended not to understand.

The organ at the centre of the ground wheezed out the same waltz it had played since before the war while the boats swung their long slow arcs. Tommy whistled along, badly, and flicked crumbs of cake through the holes. Dot said the chains looked thin. I said chains that had held forty years of farmers' sons and their sweethearts would hold a bird. She said that was not what she meant. She meant the height, and whether anything that high could be trusted to bring you back down again.
On the last night the fair struck its tents in the rain and the lorries groaned off towards Hollin. Tommy forgot the tin on the rail of an empty boat. Nobody had told us the lid had a catch, but the rain had swollen the wood, and when the wind came up off the common the lid simply gave. Dot went first and I followed, and we landed in the hawthorn at the edge of the field with the lamps still burning behind us. In the morning Tommy found the empty tin and a single purple petal stuck to the rim. He kept it, I think, though he never did work out which swing we had been on.
