Matching owl tattoos on wrists
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two near-identical owl tattoos sit side by side on the inner wrists, one facing forwards and the other with its eyes turned slightly to the side. Each owl has a yellow head, grey-blue eye rings, and a body filled with small pink, red and green flowers on a light background, with an orange-gold lower belly. Bold outlines and flat, even colour give the pair a playful, illustrative look against a red backdrop.

Dear Tomasz,

The owls came back to the walled garden the week after the frost, as if they had read the notice you pinned to the shed. Two of them, identical in their grey eye rings and yellow hoods, though the younger one sits with her head cocked the way Mam used to when she was listening for the kettle. Mrs Abernethy at number nine says they are barn owls who have lost their barn. I say they have simply found the best roost in the parish, the pear tree by the sundial, where the wall keeps the wind off.
I have been sewing again. You will laugh, but the quilt Mam started in 1978 had a patch of pink poppies I never could finish, and this morning I found the scraps in the bottom drawer. I cut two owl shapes from them, with flowers pressed into the bellies like a meadow, and pinned them to the potting bench to see if the birds would notice. They did not. They sat on the wall and watched me instead, one looking straight at the house and one looking at the gate.
That is the thing I want to tell you. Every evening at dusk the owl with the turned head faces the lane, the same way Dad used to watch for the post van, and every evening I walk down to the gate and wait with her. Nothing comes up the lane. I know that. But she seems to think something might, and I have stopped arguing with her.
Come at Easter if you can. Bring the good scissors. We will hang the quilt on the line and see which way the owls decide to watch.
Your sister, Ruth
