Small watercolour dog on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon dog sits in profile with a heart-shaped pink wash on its chest. The dog is drawn in thin black outline with floppy ears and a dot eye, and the surrounding soft pink, blue and purple wash gives a watercolour effect. The tattoo sits alone in the centre of a plain, neutral frame on the inner ankle.

The onion crate had come aboard at Rotterdam full of straw and bruised skins, and Mags Tulloch had swept it out twice before she noticed the dog. It sat in the corner by the bread bin, tail tucked round its front paws, one ear flopped over its eye like a dropped sock. 'You're not on the manifest,' she told it. The dog thumped its tail once against the lino and went on watching the loaf.

By the third day the cook had stopped pretending. She saved the crusts, the ends of the bacon and the last of the kettle water in a tin mug for him. The crew named him Dougal after the bosun's brother, though nobody could say who had decided it. In the mornings he waited by the stove while the porridge caught on the bottom of the pan, and when the Marjorie Lane pitched into the Skagerrak he braced himself against the table leg with the patience of a dog who had done this before.

Off Lowestoft a harbour launch came alongside, and a man in a waxed coat asked after a yellow dog with a white blaze. Mags said she had seen no such animal. Dougal was under the bunk in the second mess, and she could hear his tail knocking against the wood. When the launch chugged off and she turned round, the dog had crept out and was sitting on her clean tea towel, in profile, looking up at her as though she were the one who needed finding.

That night she wiped a clear patch in the steam on the galley porthole and drew a heart with one finger, then a dog beside it with floppy ears. Dougal leaned against her shin and breathed on the glass until the heart blurred at its edges like something painted in water, and neither of them bothered to wipe it away.
