Matching Mickey and Minnie heart tattoos
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
Two arms are shown side by side, each with a Mickey or Minnie Mouse head silhouette filled with black swirling filigree. The top design is Mickey with a solid blue heart centred inside, and the lower design is Minnie with a red polka dot bow and a solid red heart. Thick black outlines frame both designs, with the blue and red fills providing the only colour against the skin tone.

The jotter had been in my kitchen drawer since 1998, its cover soft as cloth, and I brought it to the Hollin Park reunion because I thought it might be funny. It was not. Halfway through the buffet, Dean Pargeter found me by the sausage rolls and read the back page over my shoulder without asking. Two mouse heads, ears like full stops, filled with curly filigree copied off a biscuit tin. His was coloured blue. Hers was red, with a spotted bow perched on top like an afterthought.

We had sworn in biro that at eighteen we would get them done together, at the parlour above the chippy on Wakefield Road, and that nobody else would be told. Dean laughed and said he had been too scared of the needle, and then, quieter, that Shaz had gone to Leeds the summer after the leavers' do and never written back. He asked if I had heard anything. I had only heard she was a nurse now, living two streets from the school gates.
Then the hall doors opened and there she was in a green coat, scanning the room the way she used to scan the register. Dean put his plate down so fast the gravy slopped. He did not go to her. He stood there holding my jotter while she crossed the floor, and when she reached us she took it from his hand and ran her thumb over the blue heart he had never coloured in on skin.
"You kept it," she said. Then she dug a biro out of her pocket, drew a second red heart beside his on the page, and handed the book back. "Eighteen was a long time ago," she said. "The needle's free on Saturdays."
