Matching cartoon mice on the hands

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are shown side by side, each with a black cartoon mouse tattoo on the back near the wrist, with the figures turned towards each other as if kissing. The linework is bold and clean, with solid black fills on the ears and bodies and white areas left as skin. A small red bow on the right figure is the only colour in the design, and the background is a grey sleeve and a pink top.

In those days the mill stood on the wrong side of the river, and the miller kept a cat called Sergeant Bramble who believed every crumb in the building belonged to him. The mice lived behind the flour sacks. Tobias Fen had ears as round as wheel hubs and a habit of pinching ribbon from the miller's wife's Sunday hat. Marigold Quill never stole anything except a look, and she gave that freely to the one mouse she had already decided on.

She wore a red bow she had taken from the same hat, so nobody could mistake her at the harvest dance. Tobias asked her to dance three times and trod on her tail twice. The third time she told him to stop being so gallant and kiss her properly. He did, forgetting the cat was watching from the rafters with one eye open.

Bramble came down the beam slowly, ready for a feast. Instead he sat on the flour sack and sighed, because even a cat knows when a thing is finished before it has started. He let them walk out into the moonlight with the cheese untouched. They were married under the waterwheel the next spring, and Bramble gave the bride away, which is more than my brother managed at his.
