Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two inner wrists are shown side by side, each with a small outline tattoo of a Disney mouse head. The left one is Minnie Mouse with a red polka dot bow, and the right one is Mickey Mouse, both drawn in thin black linework with no shading. The ink is black with a red bow, set against plain skin on a light background.

Nobody in Coldhollow would have bet on the mice, but by Candlemas the mill was clean for the first time in a generation. Old Hesketh, who ground corn for the whole valley, swore the little grey pair had come out of the beech wood the night his wife was buried. One of them wore a scrap of red ribbon knotted round its ear, where a child had tied it and lost it. They were not thieves. They took only what fell from the sacks, and they never touched the wheel.

The village children named them after the two sisters who had lived in the cottage by the ford. The taller sister had gone under the ice one March, and the shorter one had stopped speaking, and the ribbon had been hers. When the frost came hard that winter, Hesketh found the mice curled in the empty flour bin, noses touching, the one with the bow tucked against the other's round grey ear as if to keep it warm.
In spring his grandson set a wire cage by the hopper and went to bed certain of his own cleverness. At dawn the cage stood open, the latch lifted clean, and across the dusted boards ran two sets of small round prints, one set trailing a thread of red.
Hesketh left the bin lid propped after that. When the blackbirds came back to the alder, he could hear feet scratching in the rafters above the stones, two sets, one lighter than the other, keeping time.
