Matching cartoon robot tattoos on shoulders
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Two small tattoos of the same cartoon robot character sit on bare skin, one on a shoulder blade and one on an upper arm. The linework is thin and dark, with light grey shading giving the rounded body some volume. The soft, warm-lit background and out-of-focus hair keep attention on the two designs.

The third letter from the manufacturer said what the first two had said, only more politely, so Ruth folded it into a paper boat and set it afloat in the sink while the kettle thought about boiling. Her brother Dev leaned in the doorway with a spanner in each hand. "They're not going to fix him," he said. "They can fix him. They just won't pay for it."

The robot sat on the workbench between a radio and a tin of loose screws, round as a loaf and white as a clean tea towel, with one foot dented from the time he'd rolled down the stairs chasing a cat. The small red light in his forehead had been blinking slower since Tuesday. Their gran had bought him from a catalogue for the sole purpose of hugging people who were feeling low, and he had done it so often that his chest panel had worn a shiny patch.
Ruth pried the lid off a biscuit tin, cut a disc of copper from a dead kettle element and soldered it, badly, over the cracked sensor. Dev held the torch. Nobody spoke. When she plugged the cable in, the red light stuttered, then steadied, and the robot tilted his head as if someone had called his name from another room.
"Hello," he said in his soft, slightly flat voice. "You look like you need a hug." Dev laughed until he had to sit down on the floor. Ruth let him wrap his short arms round her, and the paper boat drifted slowly towards the plughole, unnoticed by everyone.
