Matching castle and Dream wrist tattoos
Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown with matching black tattoos, each a castle silhouette set inside a circle with the word Dream written beneath. The linework is solid and bold, with the castle towers and the lettering filled in black ink on pale skin. The hands are clasped together in the centre of the frame, and a sepia, vintage-style filter with a pale border softens the overall image.

Nobody in Carrow Vale had seen the castle with their own eyes, so Mother Ysolde sold drawings of it from her stall by the well, sketched freehand on the back of tin lids for a copper apiece. My sister Pell spent three coppers on the first morning of spring and came home with two. She pressed one into my palm and said a castle you could carry was better than one you could only wish for.

We went to the forge that evening. Old Haskett had a stub of soot-black wax he used for sealing letters, and he warmed it over the coals and dabbed it through the lid's pattern onto our wrists, the towers first, then the round moon of the circle, then the word Dream in curling capitals beneath. Pell's hand shook and the D came out wobbly. Haskett laughed and said the wobbles were the bit that would stay truest.
Pell left for the coast road in the autumn, with a cart, a violin and a letter from the tax-reeve that she said she would never open. I stayed. Each Sunday I went back to the forge and had Haskett go over my ink again, so the towers stayed sharp against my pale skin while the rest of the village's paint faded to nothing.
Three winters on, a carter brought a parcel from the coast. Inside was a tin lid, the castle drawn on it in a hand I knew, and beneath it a single line: the towers are smaller from here, but you can still see them. I held my wrist against the lid. The ink on my skin had gone soft at the edges, and the circle on the tin was already rusting, so I laid the two side by side and found they matched exactly.
