Matching cherry blossom tattoos on upper arms

Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Two upper arms are shown side by side, each carrying a cherry blossom branch with pink flowers, soft grey-green washes and loose black ink splatters. The left tattoo is larger and extends down the arm with dark sketchy linework at its base, while the right one is smaller and more compact. The soft wash effect and pale background give the composition a painterly feel.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pass above Corran Gap froze shut every winter, and the two sisters who lived either side of it had learned to send word by goat. Mairead kept the lower farm where the river bent, and Sile kept the high pasture where the wind never let up. Neither had crossed the saddle since their mother's burying, and both said it was the other one who should come.

One spring a peddler came over the col with a cutting wrapped in wet sacking. He swore it was a plum branch that would flower before the snow was gone if it were set on something that had lost its colour. Sile took it, grafted it onto the old stone trough by her door, and carried snowmelt up in two buckets each morning. The petals came out in a wash of pink so pale it looked like breath on glass. She left the black spurs of the bark alone, because her mother had said a tree shows its age honestly or not at all.

Mairead saw the blossom from the far slope and knew the branch was not wild. She climbed until her calves burned, carrying a sprig from her own tree, and found Sile sitting by the trough with ink on her fingers from the tally of goats. Neither of them said much. They bound the two sprigs together with red wool and tied one end to each of their wrists.

By dusk the snow had softened on the saddle, and they went down on their own sides of the mountain. The pass never closed again after that, and people in both valleys say the blossom falls on both slopes at once.
