Matching constellation tattoos on two hips
Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo
Two people are photographed from behind, each with a constellation design of small star-shaped dots joined by thin lines. The left design uses blue and teal stars and the right uses purple and pink stars, both drawn in fine, precise linework. The tattoos sit side by side on the lower back and hip areas, with a teal jacket and dark clothing around them.

The snow came down the valley the afternoon the ferryman's boat was hauled up, and by dusk the Tarn Gate Inn had only the two of you and a stove that smoked whenever the wind turned. Mrs Pargeter set a lamp in the window and told you to stop pressing your nose to the glass. Outside there was nothing but white and the dark shapes of the fells.

Dilys, who kept the register, had a folded sheet from her grandfather, a sketch of the sky over the Solway as he had seen it the winter he went through the ice. He had drawn seven stars and joined them with pencil, and beneath them, in careful copperplate, he had written 'Follow these home.' You had copied it twice, once in blue ink and once in a plum-coloured pencil, because neither of you could agree on what colour the night ought to be.
By midnight the snow had stopped and the clouds tore open. The stars came out exactly where the drawing said they should, seven small points above the byre roof. Dilys laughed and said the old man had got the handle of the Plough wrong by a finger's width. You took the sheet from her hand and held it against the cold glass, and the pencil lines lined up with the sky as if someone had laid them there on purpose.
In the morning the plough would come up the road, and the two of you would walk down to meet it with the paper folded inside your coats. Neither of you said that the stars had been up there all along, waiting for somebody to join them up.
