Cartoon meat tattoo across a belly
Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows cartoon meat items, including sausages, steaks, a drumstick and a ham with a lit sparkler, arranged around a speech bubble reading MEAT in green and yellow lettering. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat pink and red fills and pale cyan rays radiating across the skin. The design spreads horizontally across the lower abdomen, and the subject's face is not shown.

The sparkler was Mr Pargeter's idea, and by the time the ham reached the bandstand it had burnt down to a stub and the brass band had given up on the anthem. Dennis Foy held the tray level with both hands, the way his mother had taught him to carry Sunday gravy, and kept his eyes on the bunting. Somebody in the front row was filming on a phone. Somebody else was shouting MEAT, as if the lettering on the speech bubble had not been clear enough.

Three sausages had already slipped their moorings. They wriggled off the trestle table and across the grass towards the tombola, glossy and indignant. The drumstick had gone under a pushchair and would not be coaxed out. Two steaks sat on the lid of the rubbish bin looking dignified, which was more than could be said for the rest of the float, a flatbed trailer draped in cyan crepe paper that Mr Pargeter had insisted would scream 'premium' from the car park.
'Put the ham down, Dennis,' said Mrs Okonedo from the flower stall, not unkindly. He did. The sparkler gave one last hiss and went out, leaving a thin curl of smoke above the ham's bright pink face. For a moment nobody spoke. Then the mayor, who had been waiting all afternoon with a rosette in his top pocket, laughed so hard he had to sit down on a crate of marrows.
The rosette said Most Enthusiastic Display. Dennis pinned it to his apron that evening, in the back room of the shop, and found the speech bubble letters had come loose from the board in the boot of the van. He stuck them back up in the wrong order. MEAT, he read, and then, because it was the only honest thing left to do, he laughed too.
