Small wrist and ankle tattoos in a collage
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows four close photographs of small tattoos on wrists and ankles. Three panels show simple black fine line marks: outlined hearts on three wrists and a pair of hash symbols on two wrists beside a metal bracelet. The top-right panel shows a larger coloured design of two hands forming a shape in front of an orange circle, with blue cuff details and bold outlines, on a forearm against a patterned background.

Day 41, and the sea has finally gone flat enough to write in. I keep the tally the way Mrs Okonedo taught us at the dockside school, four strokes and a bar through, but the bar slides off the page whenever the swell lifts us. Day 41 also has a small heart somebody scratched into the hatch cover with a nail. Nobody will admit to it. Pilar says the cook did it, Jonah swears it was the captain's boy, and I know it was Tomasz, because he cannot draw a straight line to save his life.

Tonight the sun went down red as a cut, and the whole crew came up to watch, because after six weeks you will take any colour that isn't grey. Pilar and I sat on the winch with our hands raised against the orange disc, working out the shadow play our grandmothers taught us: thumbs hooked, wrists touching, and a bird spreading its wings over the water. Hers kept collapsing into a heap. Mine kept looking like a dog. We laughed until the watch officer told us to keep the noise down.
I am writing this for you, Maud, so there is something from the far side of the ocean in your post. I have kept the count every night since we left, and I have not missed a bar. When we make landfall I will show you the bird, and you can tell me whether it is a bird or a dog.
