Walk by faith script on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black script tattoo reads walk by faith, running diagonally from the side of the foot up towards the ankle. The linework is thin and even, with smooth, looping letterforms and no shading. The skin is a warm tone against a patterned black and white bedsheet in the background.

The man in the back room had been at my breakfast table since six, which was early for a lodger who paid by the week and never came down before the kettle. I found him with the window pushed open, the Channel the colour of slate, and his boots lined up by the door as though they had been sent for.

He wanted the old cliff walk to the lighthouse, the one the council had fenced off after the winter storms. "It's sound," he said, folding his map into a square no bigger than a playing card. "Walk by faith, my mother used to say, and the path will come up to meet you." I told him that was the sort of thing people said before a fall. He only smiled and asked whether I had a spare length of string.

We set off at eight with the gulls tearing at the bins behind the chip shop. Past the railings the path ran narrow between gorse and drop, and the wind pushed at us from the side. He tied the string to his wrist and to mine and went a half step ahead, testing each plank with the toe of his boot before he trusted his weight to it. Where the cliff had given way, a gap of six feet or so yawned over the rocks, and the boards on the far side were splintered and grey. He stood at the edge for so long I thought he meant to turn back.

Instead he stepped out over nothing. The string went taut between us and I understood he expected me to hold him up as much as the wood. I did. The far boards took his weight with a crack like a pistol shot, and then he was across, laughing, hauling me after him. At the lighthouse he untied the string and knotted it round the rail, a little white thread against the iron, and said he would not need it on the way back, since the path had already come up to meet him.
