Matching dotwork leaf tattoos on forearms
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms show near-matching tattoos of a fern-like leaf rendered in stippled dotwork. The left design sits inside a dense circle of dots with pale leaf veins, while the right has a leaf inside a looping outline that resembles latte art. The shading is built entirely from black dots in varying densities, set against plain pale skin and a white tiled wall.

The milk was too warm again, and Nell said so before Bea had finished lifting the jug. "Cold enough to fight back," she said, the way she always did, tapping the steel with one knuckle. Outside the window the harbour wall was disappearing under spray, and the gulls had given up on the bins and sat in a row along the railings like customers who had already decided against the cake.

They had opened the café at the top of the harbour steps eleven years earlier with a loan, a secondhand espresso machine and one rule chalked above the counter: nothing leaves without a leaf on it. Nell had learned the pour from a Dutch barista who came through on the ferry one winter and never went home. Bea had learned it from spilling. The fern came later, a doodle Nell drew on a napkin the night they signed the lease. Bea insisted it was a palm. They had argued about it every morning since.
The Halloran boat came in at noon with one man aboard and no sign of the other. Mrs Halloran sat by the window with her coat still dripping and asked for a flat white she did not want. Bea made it without thinking, her hands moving the way they did when there was nothing useful to say. The jug tipped, the foam held, and the leaf rose up through the surface, tall and uneven, its veins pale against the dark crema.
Mrs Halloran looked at the cup for a long time. "That's how he drew the fronds on the net floats," she said. Nell turned to the sink and ran the tap for no reason. Bea set the cup down and turned it so the point of the leaf faced the door, towards the water, because that was where the men would come walking up the steps if they were coming at all.
