Small heart tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Several people rest their arms together, showing small outline heart tattoos on their forearms and wrists. The hearts are simple, delicate linework in dark ink with no shading. The warm, vintage-toned photo shows a grey top and a hand with red nail polish resting on a shoulder.

Nobody at the Holbeck sorting office could say when the little hearts started. Margaret Dunn, who had worked the dead letter bench for thirty-one years, noticed the first one on a card addressed only to "Mum, the house with the green door, Hunslet." Someone had drawn a small heart beside the stamp in thin ink, the sort a nurse uses on a chart, and it made her stop with the card in her hand.

After that she started looking for them. Most weeks there were three or four: a heart on a birthday card to a man nobody could trace, a heart on a parcel of knitted socks bound for a sailor's widow in Grimsby. Margaret had no way of knowing who drew them. She suspected a girl on the early shift, or the postman who whistled his way through Armley, or nobody at all, and that the hearts were simply how a letter got through its own worry. She began copying them onto the labels of parcels she could not place, small outlines with no shading, the way her mother had drawn them on lunchboxes.
In October one envelope came back again and again, thin and blue, addressed to "Eleanor, care of the bus stop by the Co-op." Every sorter who touched it added nothing. Margaret took it home in her coat pocket, unopened because that was the rule, and on Saturday morning she walked it down to the stop. A young woman was waiting there, reading a timetable as if it might change its mind. When Margaret held out the envelope, the young woman laughed and said, "That's me. I'm Eleanor."
Margaret walked back to the sorting office without hurrying. At the bench she took a fresh card, wrote the address of the green door on it, and drew one small heart beside the stamp before she dropped it in the outgoing tray.
