Heart and arrow line tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms an open heart outline on the left, with the line running to the right and ending in an arrowhead. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink appears solid black against pale skin. The tattoo sits centrally in a close-up photo of the inner wrist and forearm, with blue fabric visible behind.

The generator coughs twice before the bulbs catch along the Waltzer, and you are already behind on the raffle tickets. Dad has left the carbon paper in the tin with the broken hinge, and the blue ink in the bottle with the cracked cap. Nobody at the Cobb Lane fair bothers with a proper till. You hand out stubs by hand and write the names in the back margin, the way Gran did at Scarborough, with a pen you are not supposed to lift.

A lad from the Pier stall leans on your counter and dares you to draw something without stopping. You take a spare ticket, set the nib at the corner, and let the line run down into a point, then loop back up and out along the edge in one long stroke. It curls over itself like a cuff turned back. When you reach the end you give it a small barb so it cannot slide off the paper. He laughs and says it looks like a broken kite, and you tell him it is a heart on its way somewhere.

The rides come down at midnight. Dad counts the float in the back of the van while the big wheel folds itself into the dark, and you find the ticket wedged in the cashbox with its arrow pointing at the gap under the flap. You fold it once, then again, and tuck it behind the sun visor where the rain cannot reach it. Seven towns later it is still there, soft at the creases, the ink gone the colour of a plum that has been dropped.
