Matching pinky promise hands on two upper arms
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two people sit side by side with their upper arms touching, each showing a matching tattoo of two hands hooked together little finger to little finger. The linework is a thin, single black outline with no shading, and the hands are drawn with open, simple contours. The tattoos are placed close together at the same height, and the skin tones and plain grey clothing keep the focus on the ink.

The seed packet had split along its seam, so Wren tipped the runner beans into her palm and counted them twice, the way Nell always did when she was nervous and pretending not to be. Beyond the greenhouse glass the allotment was going silver with dew, and the shed door banged on its hinge every time the wind changed its mind.

Nell said the job in Leeds started on Monday, that the lab would pay for her flat for the first three months, that it was only an hour and a half on the train. Wren kept her eyes on the trench she was digging along the north fence. She had dug it every March since they were nine, when they had hooked their little fingers together over the churchyard wall and sworn that whoever moved away first would have to come back for Sunday lunch, and whoever stayed would keep the runner beans going.
Nell crouched beside her and pushed a finger through the wire mesh of the fence until it found Wren's. Neither of them said anything for a while. A blackbird went through the compost heap like a dropped spoon. Then Nell pressed the beans into the soil in pairs, one for each of them, and tied the canes together at the top with green garden twine, because beans would climb anything that stood still long enough.
In July the vines had wound so tightly round each other that nobody could have said which stem had come from which seed. Wren stood at the end of the row with a bucket of pods, watching the phone on the potting bench light up with a photo of a train window, and she picked the longest pod she could find and left the rest for the next visit.
