Matching wand tattoos on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two matching tattoos show a hand gripping a wand, with the wand rising upwards from the fist. The linework is thin and single-weight black, with no shading or fill. The photo is close and centred on the two inner forearms, which sit side by side against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wand had been Marjorie's idea, so the crack was hers too, the afternoon the hatbox lid came down on it in the wings of the Palace in Ashby Mere. Ivy pretended not to see it. She stood with her palm flat on the dusty boards, feeling the orchestra tune up through the floor, while Marjorie wrapped the split in black cotton and swore at the stagehands. The act was billed as the Vance Sisters, though nobody called Vance had ever been a sister to anyone.

On stage it worked because they had rehearsed the grip until their hands met at the same angle every time. Ivy would lift the wand, Marjorie would slide a card from her sleeve, and the audience never saw the join. They saw a wand rising like a question and a card that answered it. Ivy learned to keep her knuckles tight and her wrist loose, and Marjorie learned to forgive the wrist.

Marjorie left in the spring with a conjuror from Leeds, taking her half of the case and the good gloves. Ivy kept the wand. It split further in the damp of the lodgings, and she bound it again and again, practising alone by the gaslight, lifting it toward the ceiling rose. Somewhere in the fourth month she understood that the trick had never been in the wand at all. It had lived in the space between two people holding the same thing.

A postcard came the next winter with no message, only a small pen drawing of a hand gripping a wand. Ivy pinned it above the sink. Each morning she raised her tea towards the window at the old angle and waited, the way you wait for a card to appear in a hand that was never yours.
