Matching heart knot wrist tattoos with script
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two inner forearms are pressed together, each carrying a matching Celtic knot heart in red and grey with black outlines. Script lettering reads Two Hearts on one arm and That beat as one on the other, with clean, dark linework. The warm, plain background keeps the focus on the ink and the two hands clasped together.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the draught from the door, for the wind off the strand has never once in my life gone where it was asked. Brother Tadhg was the finest hand in the scriptorium at Inishmara, and the worst at keeping his mouth shut, so when the abbot set him to drawing the great knot for the Gospel the fishermen's wives had paid for, he bent over the vellum for a month and came out thin as a heron.

The knot gave him no trouble. Over and under, over and under, until the cord comes back to where it started and you cannot find the end of it. What troubled him was the heart. The abbot wanted a heart tucked in the middle of the three loops, red as the sealing wax from the boats, and every time Tadhg drew it, it came out looking like a clenched fist.
Then came the Tuesday two cousins from the lower village climbed the hill with their hands knotted together, knuckles white with the cold, and asked him to mark something for the crossing. He did not put their names on it. He drew two hearts, one for each wrist, and beside them he wrote in his best running hand the words they had said to him in the yard: two hearts, that beat as one. The younger cousin laughed and said the words were too long for a wrist. Tadhg told him a heart does not measure itself.
The boat came back that autumn with only one of them aboard. The vellum is still on the lectern, and the knot on it has never been finished, because Tadhg could never bring himself to close the loop.
