Matching heart landscape tattoos on two arms

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

Two heart-shaped tattoos show mountain landscapes with pine trees, a triangular shape resembling a tent or peak, and a lake or valley at the base. The left heart uses soft teal sky and red-pink tree accents over grey shading, while the right heart is rendered in black and grey with bold outlines and stippled ground. The photo is taken close up with the two arms pressed side by side against a striped rug.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The warden at Tarn Hollin had given up on us before we reached the last switchback, so Nell made me carry the stove while she argued with the drizzle. We were twenty-two and certain a map was a sort of promise. The peak on our sheet looked like a folded sail, and the water beneath it was the colour of pewter, which Nell swore was the only honest colour in the north.

We pitched by the shore, under a stand of pines that smelt of vinegar and wet bark. The tent leaned like a drunk. By dusk the cloud had torn open and the peak went rose, then the colour of a bruise, and Nell sat on her rucksack with the torch in her teeth, sketching in biro on the back of the map. She drew a heart around the whole view, because she said nothing that good deserved a square. I took the pencil and drew it again, darker, with the trees bunched up on the left like people waiting for a bus.

Forty years on, the sheet has gone soft as cloth. I keep it in a biscuit tin with the stove's broken igniter and a receipt for two bottles of cider. Last winter I unfolded it on the kitchen table and found the two hearts had bled into each other along the crease, so that the peak sat right in the middle of both.

Nell would have called that cheating. I call it the view.
