Matching heart and tulip wrist tattoos

Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two small matching tattoos sit on separate wrists, each showing a black outlined heart with a pink tulip bud and green leaves. The linework is bold and solid, and the pink and green fills are simple and flat. The two designs are placed side by side against lightly lit skin, with the heart open on one side and the tulip tucked inside the outline.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had the spade and Winifred had the lantern, and between them they had until the frost came down off the Wash to lift the last of the bulbs from Hollis's bed. Nobody in Sutton Fen had bought a tulip since the flood, but their father had never let a row go to waste, and the red ones he had brought over from Haarlem as a boy were still there under the sacking, wrapped in old seed catalogues.

They dug in silence. The earth came up black and sticky, and the cold got into their knuckles the way it did every October. Winifred found the bulb first, a fat brown thing the size of a walnut, and when she turned it over the pale root plate had split clean into two lobes, as though it had been waiting to be divided. She held it up to the lantern and laughed, a short unsteady sound. "We can't sell half a tulip."

"Then we don't sell it," Ada said. She took her knife from her apron and cut the bulb along the seam, neat as a loaf. Each half had its own green tip, pushing up toward the light.

They planted them that night in two chipped pots on the kitchen sill, one apiece. By Candlemas the shoots had reddened at the top and opened into little cups. Ada drew a heart around her pot in pencil, on the back of a seed packet, and Winifred drew one around hers. Years later, when the fen had drained and the pots had gone to separate houses, the two marks were still there, a heart with a bud tucked inside, and neither of them would say which one had come first.
