Matching heart tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two arms are shown side by side, each with a small heart drawn as a single continuous black line that loops back on itself. The left heart has a red inner loop and the right has a teal one, and the lines are thin and clean. The skin is evenly lit against a soft blue and patterned background, with the tattoos centred in the frame.

The two girls came up the front steps of Gull Rise on the second Tuesday of October with one brown suitcase between them and an argument about tram fare, which told me they would stay the winter. I gave them the back room with the sea view and the cracked jug. People who quarrel about sixpence are rarely running from anything worse than each other.

On their third night they sat at the hall table with my ledger open and a teal crayon from the sewing box. Nell drew first. She set the point at the top of a heart and carried the line down and round without lifting it, so the shape looped back through itself like a length of wire. Win took the red chalk and drew a smaller loop inside Nell's, then Nell drew inside hers. When they finished, two hearts were knotted together on the page and Win had smudged one with her thumb. I said the lines would never last. Win said the line didn't need to end, you only had to keep going round.

In March a telegram came for Nell from a cable station on the Cornish coast, where her father had once worked. She read it over toast, folded it small, and caught the 7.40 without her coat. Win stayed on, washing the cracked jug and paying her board in full every Friday. She never once asked me to take the ledger down.

Nell came back in June with a parcel wrapped in oilcloth. Inside was a notebook full of hearts, one for every town she had reached, and a letter saying the line never closed, she had checked every time. I put the register back on its shelf between the tide tables and the fire insurance. On wet afternoons I still trace the two loops with one finger, round and round, without lifting it.
