Matching stick figures holding hands on ankles

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

Two bare feet and ankles are shown side by side, each with a small tattoo of a stick figure holding hands with another figure. The linework is thin and black, with a small red shape near the heads and a heart-like outline at the joined hands. The skin is light and the background is a dark speckled surface.

Dear Wren,

The big top came down in Sheffield on Tuesday, and the lads folded it like a bed sheet nobody wants to sleep under. Mr Aldous has sold the ponies to a farm outside Doncaster and kept the lion, which he says is worth more than the rest of us. I'm writing from the back of the caravan because I can't sleep, and because you said you'd write first and you haven't.

I found the old rehearsal book under the wardrobe trunk. Page nine still has the drawing you did in biro the winter we were twelve: two little figures holding hands, one with a red dot on its head where you'd stuck a bit of Mum's nail varnish for a ribbon. You made me give mine a bow too, though I never owned a bow in my life. I tried to rub it off with my thumb and it only smudged into the paper like a bruise.

The joined hands are still there, with the loop you drew round them like a heart that couldn't decide on its shape. I don't know why I keep looking at it when I should be packing the cups and saucers.

Say something back, even if it's only a postcard of a lighthouse. I'll leave the caravan door unlocked until the frost comes.

Love, Nell
