Two small fine line script letters, one with a tiny heart, tattooed in dark ink on the inner wrists in a sepia photograph.

Two small script letters on wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two small script letters sit on separate wrists, each drawn in thin, looping dark ink. The letter on the lower wrist has a tiny heart beside it, and the letter on the upper wrist has a second small heart. The sepia tone makes the ink appear brown, with soft shading and a plain background of skin.

Dear Tom, the kettle has boiled dry twice since Tuesday, and Mrs Penhallow says the gulls have taken to roosting on the chapel roof as though they were waiting on a boat. I am not waiting on anything. I am only sitting at the kitchen table with the pen you left in the drawer, the one that scratches on the left-hand downstroke, writing to you in the looping hand my mother spent a whole winter trying to correct.

The Marigold went out on Monday with the wind backing south-west, and Jack Rowe's boy says she will make Penzance by Thursday if the Lizard keeps its temper. I have put a stamp on this and given it to Edna at the post office, who has promised to walk it down to the packet herself. She asked what she should write on the envelope and I said nothing at all, only my name and a little heart beside it, the way I did on the birthday card you pinned above the stove.

Edna came up the lane this morning with two envelopes in her apron pocket and a face like a fish on a slab. One was mine, returned by the packet with no note at all. The other was in your square capitals, dated from Lisbon a fortnight ago, and it said you had written to me too, a line about the wind and a heart drawn beside your name. We had crossed in the post like two ships passing without lamps, each of us sure the other had gone quiet.

I have pinned both to the board above the stove now, next to the birthday card. They hang with their hearts turned towards each other, and the kettle is on again, because Edna says you will be home by Thursday regardless of what the Lizard thinks.
