Matching sisters infinity heart tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two wrists or inner forearms each carry an infinity loop shaped into a heart, with the word sisters written in cursive script through the loop. One design is shaded green and the other pink, and each has a small heart in the centre. Black outlines and fine lines sit on plain skin against a plain background.

The ferry to Lindisfarne had been cancelled again, so Mags spent the afternoon in the back room of the chandlery, sorting spools of tarred twine while her younger sister argued with the harbourmaster through the open window. Ruth had come home with a plan and a second-hand map of the tidal causeway, and Mags did not trust either of them.

The letter had arrived in March, addressed to both of them in their dead mother's handwriting, though it had been posted from Berwick in a hand neither of them knew. Inside was a single pressed ribbon of green silk and a line that read: the loop only closes if you walk it together. Ruth had laughed at that. Mags had not, and had kept the silk in the tin where their father used to keep his pipe tobacco.
They crossed at low tide the next morning, Ruth ahead with the map, Mags behind counting the posts that marked the safe path. Halfway over, the sea came in faster than the chart promised, and for one long minute they stood back to back on a sandbar with the water rising around their ankles. Ruth reached behind her and found Mags's hand, and they stayed like that until the tide turned and the causeway ran dry again.
On the far shore, a stone cottage with a heart cut into its lintel waited with its door open. Inside, on the table, lay two spools of pink and green thread and a note in their mother's hand: you were never meant to choose which one of you goes first.
