Infinity band tattoos on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown close together, each with a tattoo around a finger. The upper finger has a bold black infinity-symbol band, while the lower finger has a thin-lined chain of infinity loops with a small heart at its centre. The ink is solid black and the photo is taken from above against a plain grey background.

The bellows wheezed like a tired dog and Tom kept his eye on the glow, because Ada Lowe never let a weld go unchecked. She hung the finished length over the anvil rail and walked it end to end, link by link, the way other women read letters from the front.

Every link was a figure of eight, one loop folding into the next so the chain had no start and no finish. Her mother had taught her the pattern for hauling barge tow, and it was the only pattern Ada trusted. Tom had made forty links that week and his were lopsided. Hers were not.
"What's that one?" he asked, pointing at a small heart-shaped link sitting at the centre of the run, its curves a little heavier than the rest.
"A mistake," Ada said. "I'm keeping it."
The chain went out on the Mary Ellen the following Monday, bound for Gloucester, and Tom stood on the towpath until the barge was a smudge of smoke against the cut. Years later, when the works had shut and the forge was cold, he found the heart link hung on a nail above the door, still dark with soot, its loops worn smooth where a thumb had rubbed them. He never asked her where the rest of the chain had gone. Some things, he decided, were meant to keep turning.
