Infinity symbols on two fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two pale hands rest palm down on a dark wooden surface, with a black infinity symbol tattooed on one finger of each hand. The symbols are simple, with smooth, even outlines and solid black ink. The close framing puts the two tattoos at the centre, with the fingers and knuckles softly lit and the background falling into shadow.

The kettle has boiled twice since the day shift went down, and I keep stopping with the spoon in my hand to listen for the cage. I am writing this at the table because the window is full of rain and I want something to hold while I wait.

You will laugh at me, but I have been thinking about the afternoon we went into Mr Ruddock's back room in Seaham with your mother's ten pounds and came out with the same small loop on our fingers. He drew it first with a biro on the back of a receipt, and you said it looked like a sideways eight that had got bored of being a number. Every night since I have rubbed my thumb over mine, still a little raw at the edges in the lamp light, and thought of yours on the other side of a wall of coal.

Today the lamp room man came up the lane looking at his boots. I did not drop the kettle. I just laid my hand flat on the table, the way we do, so the two marks sat in the wood's grain together. Then I saw his face and thought, no, not yet, and he said only that there had been a fall at the face and the shift was being brought up slow. So I am sending this with the milk man, and I am asking you to come up the lane and show me your finger, Tom, and I will show you mine, and then we can stop counting.
