Matching jam and peanut butter toast tattoos
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Two arms are shown side by side, each with a cartoon slice of toast character with a smiling face, blue eyes and outstretched arms. The left character is coloured purple to look like jam and the right is tan and orange like peanut butter. Both have bold black outlines and simple flat colour fills against plain skin, and the matching designs are centred on each upper arm.

They had come out of the same loaf in the same Tesco bag, cut on the same board by the same hand, and had been set on opposite sides of the bread bin ever since, so they had never quite learnt to stop comparing. Nobody in the flat above the chip shop ever ate them separately. Mr Pemberton from number nine used to say you couldn't have one without the other, and he was usually right about breakfast.
On Thursday the gas was switched off for the boiler man and the flat went quiet. The kettle was cold and the two of them sat on the worktop in the grey light from the window. Jam stopped talking altogether. Peanut Butter, who could not bear a silence, asked what was wrong, and Jam admitted he had been thinking about the day they would be toasted and parted, and he did not like the idea of it one bit.
Peanut Butter said they would be toasted together then, because the grill in the new flat was wide enough for two. The next morning the toaster stuck halfway down, and when the lever finally popped, the two slices came up pressed together, golden face against sticky face, and neither of them ever mentioned the argument again.
