Jake had been stretching since breakfast, which was the only sensible way to reach the high apples on the old Cordwainer tree at the end of Larkfield Lane. Finn stood underneath with the wicker basket hooked over one arm, squinting up and calling out which fruit was worth the trouble.

"That one's got a wasp in it," he said. "That one's fine. That one's the perfect one, Jake, go left."

Jake's back legs stayed planted in the long grass while the rest of him went up into the branches like a spring let go, orange and lumpy in the afternoon sun. He plucked three apples, dropped two into the basket, and kept the third clamped in his teeth while he folded himself back down between the boughs. The whole tree shook, and a shower of leaves came down on Finn's cap.

By four o'clock the basket was full and the wasps had lost interest. They sat on the stone wall with their knees touching, sharing a bruised windfall that Jake insisted was the sweetest of the lot. Finn bit into it and winced, then laughed, and Jake lifted both his arms above his head in the way he did when he was pleased with himself. Finn copied him without thinking, two shapes against the hedge, while the shadows of the apple trees stretched long across the lane and the basket sat between them, heavier than either had expected.
