Two wrists are shown side by side, each carrying a simple cartoon creature with a bold black outline and large round eyes. The upper design is filled with brown and has a small pink patch, while the lower design is filled with pink and has a blue eye. The shapes are flat and rounded, with the colour sitting inside the outlines against a plain background.

The big top had three holes in its roof by October, and Dessa Pryce kept a bucket under each one. Nobody had paid us to mend it since the council stopped answering letters. What we had instead was the sideshow tent, a fold-up stage, and two felt-tip creatures Ruth and I had drawn on the back of a programme the night the generator died.

Mudge was mine. He was brown and round as a loaf, with one eye that stared and one that wandered off to the left, because I had been trying to draw a surprised bear and got bored halfway. Ruth's was Pim, pink as a boiled sweet, with a blue eye she insisted was the important one. We agreed they were a pair. Pim always waited for Mudge to finish a sentence before saying anything rude.
When the last ticket booth shut in Carlisle, Ruth got a letter from a cousin in Leeds offering work at a cold store. She packed the van before dawn. I stood by the gate holding the bucket that had caught the rain all summer, and that was when I saw she had left the programme on the step, folded once, with Mudge on one side and Pim on the other, both outlines gone soft from the damp.
I still have it. Some nights I sit under the one hole left in the roof and go over the lines in biro so they stay dark. Pim's blue eye is fading faster than the rest. I trace it every Sunday and tell Mudge the news from the lorry park, which is usually nothing, and he listens with his good eye and his bad one both pointed at me.
