Matching maneki-neko cat tattoos on feet
Japanese · Other · Colour · Photo
Two matching tattoos of maneki-neko lucky cats sit on the tops of a pair of bare feet, each cat raising a paw and wearing a red collar with a bell. Cherry blossom flowers and falling petals surround the cats, and a small character is marked on each cat's coin. The outlines are bold and clean, with soft shading and bright orange and pink fills against a textured carpet background.

The lacquered cat on Haru's counter had beckoned customers for forty years, and in all that time its paw had never once come down. Across the lane Tomas Feld sold cracked kettles and laughed at it every morning. "A cat that waves at nobody," he said, "is a cat with a grudge." Haru only polished its gold coin and rang the small bell at its throat when the lamps were lit.

One night in March the wind came up off the harbour and carried cherry petals through the city, down past the shuttered fish stalls, over the tram lines, and into both their shops. Haru woke to find a petal stuck to her cheek and a sound like a bell from the far end of the lane. Her cat was ringing by itself. Across the way, Tomas's porcelain cat, which had sat unmoved on his shelf for years, was ringing too, its paw lifted higher than hers.
They went out together in their nightclothes, slippers slapping on the cold stones, and met under the lamp at the corner. Neither spoke for a long while. Then Tomas held up his cat and Haru held up hers, and the bells answered each other across the wet street until the window lights came on one by one and the whole lane was awake, wondering what had been calling them.
By morning the petals had gone and both cats sat as they always had, paws raised, saying nothing. Haru never asked Tomas to stop laughing. He never asked her to stop polishing. But every evening after that, one of them would lift a hand to the other across the lane, and the other would wave back, and that was the whole of the bargain.
