Matching knot bands on two ring fingers

Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest side by side, each with a black interlaced knot band tattooed around a ring finger. The bands are made of clean, even linework with no shading, and the loops overlap in a repeating woven pattern. The image is in black ink only, with a close crop on the fingers and a pale blue-green fabric in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had sold the last of the tow ropes by noon, and the heat coming off the highway made the tin shed ring like a struck pan. The knot she had been trying to get right for a week lay on the bench: a Turk's head worked in cotton line, each strand going over and under the last until the eye could not find where it started. Her father had taught her that one. He used to say a knot nobody could undo was no use to anyone who needed it undone.

A pickup pulled in from the east at four, the passenger holding a carrier bag on her knees. They wanted two bands, she said, the width of a finger, nothing that would catch on a steering wheel. They wanted them to match. Nell asked how long they had been married, and the woman laughed and said they hadn't yet, that the bands were for October, for a chapel in Barstow with a border collie as ring bearer.

Nell worked the cord slowly, counting the crossings under her breath the way her father had, so the pattern would repeat without a seam. She made the first band, then the second, then sealed the ends with a match flame and tested each one over her own knuckle. The woman watched her hands the whole time and didn't once look at the road.

They paid in notes folded small and drove off with the bands in the carrier bag. Nell swept the bench and found a short tail of line curled on the floor, no longer than a thumbnail. She pulled it tight anyway, then sat with the cord warm in her palm while the road shimmered and emptied out to the horizon.
