Matching LEGO brick ankle tattoos

Ankle · Colour · Photo

The photograph shows two ankles, one with a blue LEGO brick and the other with a pink LEGO brick, each with visible studs on top. The outlines are clean and the bricks have simple flat shading with a highlight, and the two designs are similar in size and shape. Dark denim cuffs sit above the ankles against a dark blue background.

Monday. The blue batch came off the press with a fin of flash along one edge, and Tobias swore he could not sell a brick with a seam like that. I told him the seam was the reason anyone would want it. Nobody trusts a perfect thing that has come straight out of a box.

The pink was an accident. Mrs Haddow, who ran the colour room for thirty-one years, mixed the wrong pigment into a tin she had labelled for something else, and by the time anyone noticed, eleven hundred bricks had gone into the hopper. We expected them to end up in the bin. Instead the girl from the Saturday stall picked one up, pressed it against the back of her hand as if it were a stamp, and asked whether she could have the rest for her cousin's birthday.

Mrs Haddow would not let me throw out the leftovers. She kept one pink brick on her windowsill until she retired and used to say the studs were the only honest part of any toy, because they showed exactly where the next piece was meant to go. I have thought about that all week while cutting a new mould for the blue, the same size as the pink, the same eight studs in two rows of four.

Yesterday a couple came into the shop and asked for one of each, the same size, to match. They held them side by side on the counter for a long time, turning them over. Then the taller one pressed the blue onto the pink, and the studs slid into the hollows as if the two had always been one piece cut in half. I wrapped them in tissue and did not charge for the postage. I have put the mould drawings in the window beside the old pink brick, which is still there, slightly faded on the sill.
