Three matching puzzle piece wrist tattoos
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three people's arms are linked together, each with a small puzzle piece tattoo on the wrist or forearm. The pieces have soft, blended edges with splashes of colour around them, in blues, greens, pinks and yellows. The tattoos are shown close up and sit at similar sizes, creating a matching set across the three arms.

Mrs Ivy Partridge kept her jigsaw press in the back room of the shop in Whitby, and every autumn she cut one puzzle by hand for whoever came in asking. That year it was the three Crane sisters, who arrived with a painting of a lighthouse in rain and a tin of watercolours they had bought in a hurry. They wanted the lighthouse cut apart so that each of them could keep one piece.

Ivy showed them how the blade ran along the wavy line, and how to dampen the board so the paint wouldn't flake. The eldest, Margaret, cut too fast and split a corner. The middle one, Bea, insisted her piece must be the lamp. The youngest, June, asked for the piece with the sea in it and sat on the back step until it dried, the blues and greens bleeding into the pinks like rinsed ink on a saucer.
When they came back for the boxes, June's piece was missing. Ivy searched the drawer twice, then under the press and behind the glue pot. At last she found it wedged beneath the lid of the paint tin, a small square of sea and rose still faintly tacky at one edge, with a thumbprint pressed into the wash where someone had snatched it up in a hurry.
June turned it over in her palm for a long moment. Then she laid it beside her sisters' pieces on the counter, and the three of them, who had never once agreed on anything in their lives, looked at the lighthouse and agreed that it was whole.
