Matching heart and love tattoos on the upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two women are photographed from behind, showing matching black tattoos of a heart formed by an infinity loop with the word love written in script inside it. The linework is smooth and fairly fine, with soft grey shading on the edges. The tattoos sit close to the shoulder blades, with a plain dark background and bare skin filling most of the frame.

The rope-walk at Ferriby smelled of tar and wet hemp, and by the end of the week Ida had stopped noticing it. What she noticed was the cord Mr Abbott had left on the spinning wheel, a single length of tarred line knotted back into itself so that no one could find where it began. "Endless," he called it, as if it were something to be proud of. Nell thought it was foolish and said so, loudly, while the two of them coiled the day's yarn onto the drum.

Then the wheel slipped and the cord caught on Nell's glove and pulled tight across both their palms. They stood there, each holding a side of it, neither willing to let go first.

"We could cut it," Ida said. "Then it would have ends, like everything else."

"Cut it and you've got two bits of rope that mean nothing," Nell said, in the flat certain voice she used for things already settled. She fetched the marline spike from the hook instead, and worked the strands apart, splicing each end back into its own loop, so that the cord became two rings where there had been one. Mr Abbott found them at dusk, hands black to the wrist. He looked at the rings for a long time, nodded, and hung them on nails by the door, one each, then went home without a word.

Ida still has hers. It hangs in the hall of a house in Hull, stiff with age, and each time she passes it she thinks of Nell's hands guiding the spike, steady and sure, as though they had always known the shape the thing should take.
