Two black ink tattoos of the word love in ornate script lettering, one on each wrist, shown side by side.

Matching love lettering on two wrists

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two tattoos of the word love sit on the inner wrists of two arms, with one word set upright and the other turned so the lettering reads from a different angle. The ornate script has bold black outlines, tapered strokes and curled flourishes, with solid black fill. The image is a close, slightly warm-toned shot with the two wrists filling the frame against a dark background.

"Turn it round," he said. "The lock-keeper reads from the other side. He'll see it upside down."

"He'll see it the right way up if I do it properly." She didn't look at him. The word sat on the boat's side in a shape that only made sense from two directions at once: upright for anyone on the bank, turned for anyone on the water. Her grandfather had taught her that trick on gate paint at Skipton, a flourish you could read from either end of a plank, so a bargee rowing past and a child on the lock steps both got the same message. Down at the lock, a gate groaned open and a dog barked twice.

When she finally sat back, the wet letters caught the low sun and held it. Tom reached across and touched the edge of the E with one knuckle, smudging it. She swore at him, he laughed, and the smear became a soft grey shadow under the flourish. Nell decided to keep it.
