Matching heart-key tattoos with bows on forearms
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms show matching tattoos of a key with an ornate black heart-shaped bow at the top and a ribbon tied around the shaft. The left version has a pink bow and the right has a blue bow, both with black outlines and light grey shading on the metal. The photograph is taken close up and straight on, with both designs placed side by side.

The smith in Orrin Vale never cut two keys from one blank, and everyone in the kingdom of Ysmere knew it. So when the miller's girls came up the hill with a single bar of iron and a request, old Tobiah set down his hammer and looked at them over his spectacles. You were the one who held the bar steady in the vice, eleven years old and sure of yourself. Your cousin Wren was the one who kept staring at the coals, as if they might tell her something.

The heart at the top of each key was filed from the same soft pewter, a loop that curled back on itself like the scroll on a fiddle. Tobiah wanted to know which of you would take the pink ribbon and which the blue. You both said you would take whichever was left over, and he laughed until his bellows wheezed, because that was how the oath-keepers talked before they swore themselves to the wrong lord.
Years passed, and the keys went where keys go. The pink one hung on a nail by the mill door. The blue one travelled south with you when the river froze and the roads closed, and it was the blue one that finally fitted the lock of the drowned chapel gate at Carrow Ford, where the water came up to the sill every spring and nobody had dared to open it since the old king's time.
The lock turned with a sound like a held breath let go. Inside there was nothing but a stone floor and a window full of river light, and on the sill someone had left a pink ribbon, faded to the colour of a shell. You lifted it. Your wrist was already warm from the key, and when you held the two of them together in the doorway you could not tell where one bow ended and the other began.
