Small character tattoos on two fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held together, showing a small black tattoo on the side of one finger on each hand. The marks look like upside-down characters or symbols in a fine, neat script. The photograph is in warm, soft tones with silver rings on the fingers and a plain, uncluttered background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Hanna Pell had grafted the slope above Wick Lane for forty summers, and she never let a graft take without binding it in her own linen. So when her nephew Tom came down from the ridge in August with a split thumb and a sack of cider apples he had no business carrying, she didn't ask what had happened. She sent him to the orchard gate to wait for the girl from the press house.

The girl was Mari Coyle, and she came with a stub of pencil and a saucer of ink pressed from sloes. In that valley, two people who meant to keep a thing between them wrote a mark on each other's fingers. The mark had to be drawn upside down to the one making it, so that it read true only to the one wearing it, and only when the hands were held palm to palm. Mari wrote on Tom's finger. He wrote on hers. Neither could read their own. They had to trust the other to see it right.

The thing they meant to keep was the lower orchard, which Tom's father had sold to a man in town who meant to pull the trees for timber. Mari said the marks would hold the promise until they could buy the land back. Tom said a mark on a finger was a poor deed. Hanna, listening from the ladder, said the best deeds were the ones you couldn't read without help.

They bought the orchard back eleven years later, with cider money and a loan Hanna refused to take and then signed for anyway. The ink had faded to grey by then. At harvest they stood among the trees with their hands together, and the old marks showed through, reversed and patient, while the rings slid over them with a small cold sound. Mari turned her hand so the marks faced him, and he read his name back to her, the right way round.
