Small script finger tattoos on interlocked hands
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are pressed together with fingers interlocked, and each visible finger carries a small tattoo of stylised black script lettering that runs along the side of the digit. The linework is fine and solid, with no shading, and the ink is black on light skin. The soft, close framing centres the two tattoos and the silver rings, with the background blurred into warm tones.

The band at the Majestic had given up on anything slow by eleven, so Dolores and I stood at the edge of the floor with our hands held low between us, the way you carry something you've been told not to drop. Her mother had forbidden me the house after the Whit fair, so we talked in fingers. Pressed palm to palm, nobody could see our mouths move, and nobody on the floor looked twice at two girls holding hands in the gloom.

I'd bought the rings from Sol Heller's stall on the pier for eleven shillings, the pair of them still warm from his tray. Dolores had a sewing needle and a bottle of Indian ink from her father's drawing board, and she worked on my finger at the kitchen table with her tongue between her teeth. Each letter had to be small enough to hide under a band, so she wrote them sideways, one stroke at a time, and mine came out fine and black while hers wobbled like a bird on a wire. We swapped the next night. Her mother said we looked like we'd been in a fight.
The words only read properly from the inside. Turn your hand outward and they go backwards, a row of loops that might be anything. You have to fold your fingers into the other person's and bring the two hands together before the letters come up the right way round, and by then the band has slid a little and the ink is catching the light from the bar. The orchestra went into a foxtrot. Dolores tightened her grip, and I didn't need to read anything at all.
