Matching Ohana script and flower tattoos

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

Two photographs show matching tattoos of the word Ohana in thin black script with a pink flower with yellow stamens beside it. In the top photo, two people's upper backs are shown side by side, and the lower photo shows one tattoo on a shoulder from behind in a studio setting. The black linework is fine and the flower is shaded in pink and red with yellow highlights.

Dear Nell,

The harbour master has finally let the Mary Jane back onto the slip, so I've three days of sitting on an upturned crate with nothing to do but write to you. Dad would have called that a waste of good daylight. He's been gone a year next month, and I still catch myself listening for his boots on the stairs.

You'll have heard about the boat. Half the fleet reckons I should have sold her to the Porthleven lot when the engine went, and I told them what I told you on the phone: she isn't just a boat, she's the family. Ohana, Dad used to say, and nobody in Newlyn ever knew what he meant, which suited him fine. He had the word done on his forearm after his first season out of Honolulu, the summer he came home going on about everyone being owed a place at the table. I always thought that was a daft thing to get inked.

Then on Tuesday I found the flower in the drawer with his letters. Pink, with little yellow stamens, and the word beside it in that thin looping hand. It was wrapped in a receipt from a parlour in Penzance, two names on it, one crossed out in biro. I sat in the wheelhouse for an hour with it in my palm while the gulls fought over the bait tubs.

So I'm coming to Bristol on Friday, and I'm bringing the second receipt. Your name's still on it, Nell. Put the kettle on.

Love, Jo
