Matching origami swan tattoos on forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two arms rest side by side on a floral bedsheet, each showing a small origami-style swan built from flat, faceted panels. The left swan is teal and the right is red, with crisp outlines and solid fills and no shading. The soft, slightly warm photograph focuses on the tattoos, with a white top and patterned bedding in the background.

Dear Ingrid,

The ovens were already ticking when I came in at four, and Mr Okafor had stacked the flour sacks by the back door like sandbags against the cold. I am writing this on the back of a delivery docket because the good paper went out with the Christmas orders. Your teal swan is still on the windowsill above the proving trays. One wing has gone soft from the steam, so I have set it flat under the ledger where it will dry without bending.

You taught me that you never cut paper for a swan, only fold it, and that a crease made in anger always shows. I have been practising in the quiet hour between the first batch and the rolls. Each fold makes its own small sound, like a page turned in an empty room. By the time the window goes grey over the car park, I have made two more, one for each of us, and I have not yet decided which colour I will keep.

The red one is for you, though I know you will say it is too bright for a Tuesday. I folded it from the sheet of tissue that came round the cinnamon buns, the only colour the shop had left. It has a sharp beak and the tail I always get wrong, but it sits up on the sill beside the teal one, both of them facing the same way, toward the door you will walk through when the bread is out.
