Outline and solid triangles on forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two people's inner forearms rest side by side against white bedding, one wearing a knitted sleeve and the other a grey sleeve. The left arm carries a small, thin-lined triangle outline pointing upwards, and the right arm carries a solid black triangle pointing sideways. Both are in black ink with no shading, and the soft, bright natural light keeps the composition simple.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been painting the harbour board since the tide turned, and by the time the boats came in she had put the wrong triangle on the wrong side of the slipway. Her father would have shouted. Instead Sam Teague leaned on the rail with his flask and watched her scrape the paint off with a palette knife.

"A hollow one says the channel's open," he said. "A filled one says keep off it. That's the whole alphabet of this place." He tapped the outline she had drawn first, the thin one she kept for the spring tides. "You don't fill in what isn't finished yet, Nell."

She had assumed he meant the chart. He meant his nephew's boat, which had gone out past the breakwater at Michaelmas and was still listed on the lifeboat sheet as overdue. Its hull was the empty outline nobody had the nerve to colour. Nell picked up the black tin and the small brush, and for once she did not argue with him.

At dusk she climbed the ladder and filled one triangle solid, pointing it sideways towards the open water, the way the gulls tilt when the wind backs round. Below it the outline stayed hollow, its edges still sharp where she had drawn them. Teague lit his pipe and said nothing at all, which was the kindest thing he had done all week.
