Paw prints and owl on the lower legs
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two black ink tattoos on the lower legs of a person wearing white canvas sneakers. On one ankle sit two solid black paw prints, while on the other leg a sketchy owl perches on a branch. The owl is drawn with loose, single-weight outlines, and the background is a plain grey floor with a red wall at the top left.

You find the prints first, on the platform at Hollins Bridge, a line of small dark pawmarks pressed into the fresh cement the council laid over the weekend. They lead past the ticket hall, under the clock that runs four minutes fast, and stop at the foot of the signal gantry, where a grey terrier named Biscuit used to wait for the 06:12 to Carlisle. Nobody has seen the dog since March.

The station cat, a ginger tom called Admiral, has taken over the lost property hatch, and the woman who runs the café across the road insists the owl in the rafters is the reason the mice stopped. You do not believe her, but you have been wrong about small things before. The owl sits on the gantry's crossbeam every evening, turning its head to follow the late trains in, round-eyed and unbothered, as if it had been left in charge of the signals.
On the last night of the timetable change you climb the stairs to the signal box with a torch and a tin of dog biscuits. Halfway up you hear claws on tin, then a small bark from the dark beyond the window. Biscuit is curled on the ledge beside the owl, the two of them sharing the perch as though they had settled it between themselves. The lever frame hums. A train goes through below without stopping.
You leave the biscuits on the sill and walk back down. In the morning the prints on the platform have been trodden over by a hundred commuters who never looked down, and only you know where they went.
