Two cat outlines on inner wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are raised toward the camera, showing matching-style cat tattoos on the inner wrists. The left wrist has a small, simple outline of a seated cat, while the right has a larger, fluffy-looking cat with a curled tail. The linework is thin and unshaded in black ink, set against a pale blue background with red painted nails.

Nobody on Ward 7 had ever seen the cat come in, which is how I knew it was a night thing. At two in the morning the corridor lights dim to that green-grey the trust thinks is restful, the lift sighs at the end of the hall, and there she was, sitting on the linen trolley as if she had booked a bed.

Sister Okonedo said she was a stray from the car park. I said strays don't usually climb eleven floors on their own, and she said I had been on nights too long. We called her Biro because she was thin and black and would not stop leaking onto the paperwork. The healthcare assistants could stroke her, but only the night porter, me, got a purr.

In March a lad was brought up from A&E with a broken collarbone and a small grey kitten zipped inside his hoodie, the sort you get from a shed behind a chip shop. He was frightened they would take it away. Biro studied the kitten for a long while, then curled herself round it on the bottom shelf of the linen cupboard, and the two of them slept there every night after that, one big and one small, like a full stop and its shadow.

When the lad was discharged in June he left the kitten with us, and Sister Okonedo wrote "ward cat (two)" on the whiteboard in marker that never quite came off. I still do my rounds at two. I still find Biro on the trolley, the kitten tucked against her, and I keep the lights low so neither of them has to wake for anything.
