Matching red flower tattoos with script stems
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
Three near-identical tattoos of red flowers with dark stems and small leaves, each sitting on a different person's limb. The petals are shaded from deep red to pink, with soft gradients and fine dark outlines. Dark script lettering runs along each stem, and the photo is taken at close range against a dark background.

Dear Priya, you will laugh, but I brought the ink pot from Mrs Holloway's chemistry room to the reunion, the one we swiped in Year Eleven and never returned. Gail saw it peeking out of my handbag by the buffet and said it was the most Hartley thing I could have done. I told her Hartley was never a school for returning things.

We had the poppies done the summer after our exams, at the little place above the chip shop on Mill Lane. The man with the magnifying lamp kept saying the reds would bleed together if we weren't careful, so we asked for them to run from deep crimson at the head into pink at the edges, like wine spilt on a tablecloth. The stems were the hard part. We had to choose one word and split it between us, so each stem carried a piece of it in fine dark script. Gail's says the first syllable, mine the middle, and Mo's the last, the one she chose because she said it was the only word worth finishing with.
Mo couldn't make it to the reunion. She sent a photo from Leeds of her poppy on the kitchen worktop, with a note saying the ink had gone a shade softer than ours, the way things do when you stop looking at them every morning. Gail read it aloud over the sausage rolls and nobody said anything for a bit.
Then Gail rolled up her sleeve, I rolled up mine, and we sat there at the end of the hall with the lights dimmed, holding our arms out across the table so the three stems met in a line. Together they spelled the whole word, and the chemistry pot sat between our hands like a cheeky witness. I'm sending this one by post so you'll have it in your own hand, love, and you can tell Mo the word came out right.
